chagalov: Ernst Barlach, 1932 -by Hildegard Heise[Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) - German sculptor, printmaker and writer - Ernst Barlach Society] The art historian Carl Georg Heise (husband of the photographer Hildegard Heise) commissioned Ernst Barlach to create life-size figures for the West portal of the Katharinen Church in Lübeck in 1929. Barlach was only able to complete three figures and both he and Heise were forced to stop working by the national socialists. The project was later completed by Gerhard Marcks.
